Hug Point State Recreation Site is located in Tillamook County on the Oregon Coast, about five miles south of the town of Cannon Beach. This scenic recreation site covers over 43 acres of land and includes a beautiful sandy beach, tide pools, caves, and a seasonal waterfall. But the history of this beautiful location extends far beyond the present day recreational use, and it holds a significant place in the region's history.
The name "Hug Point" has an interesting origin. Many years ago, the primitive road that ran from Arch Cape to the south was called the Hug Point Road. The road got its name from the narrow passage that passed around the point known as "Hug Point," where the road hugged the cliff. In order to allow passage of larger vehicles, the road was eventually moved inland, but the name stuck.
Before the arrival of Europeans in the area, Native American tribes used the Tillamook Head and surrounding area as a primary location for hunting, fishing, and gathering. The headland provided an excellent spot for observing whales, seals, and other marine life, and as well as for seasonal bird migrations.
In the late 1800s, the area around Hug Point became a hub for timber production, and the vast forests of the area were harvested extensively. Logs were transported from forests to the coast over the Tillamook Head, and Hug Point became a crucial loading point for these logs. A loading chute was constructed at the end of the point, and logs were slid down into waiting cargo ships.
As transportation modes changed, the need for a road became essential to move goods and people directly up and over Hug Point. The original Hug Point Road was completed in 1892, and it became a crucial transportation route for the region, especially for local farmers.
Over the next few decades, the Hug Point area gradually became a popular spot for tourists. The sandy beaches, caves, and scenic views attracted many visitors, and in 1966, Hug Point was designated as an Oregon State Park.
In the modern era, Hug Point State Recreation Site offers plenty of recreational activities for visitors. The beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and strolling, while the caves and rock formations are perfect for exploring. Visitors can also enjoy the seasonal waterfall that cascades onto the beach from the 100-foot cliffs during the rainy season.
Today, Hug Point State Recreation Site remains one of the most beautiful and historically significant locations on the Oregon Coast.
